This community inspires me. Throughout my life, I have experienced a tide of events that have challenged me physically, mentally, and emotionally. I did not face these issues alone. With help from those around me, I found myself to be more resilient than I had imagined. I know you have challenges of your own, and I want to help you. I want to walk through the fire with you to overcome--as I did--and inspire those around you to do the same because Together is Better:
I know what it is like to grow up in a financially burdened home. Paying our bills was made possible by opening lines of credit, getting loans from my father’s credit union, and having my parents continuously looking for opportunities to increase their incomes.
I know the struggles of attending public schools in one of the lowest ranked states for education in the country, and the fight to afford continuing my education at the university level. Just like my childhood, bank loans and maxed out lines of credit funded my tuition and cost of living.
I know the struggle of having student loans go to collection agencies, and the constant harassment by agents to collect and take money you just don’t have.
I know economic recessions and the difficulty in getting quality work with quality pay. Graduating college during the worst economic calamity since the Great Depression led to being laid off and filing for unemployment.
I know the commitment and sacrifice of raising my right hand and swearing an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and serve in the United States Armed Forces.
I know what it is like to deal with the Maryland Court processes; utilize the Public Defender’s Office; and most importantly, I know what it takes to summon one's resilience, bounce back, and press on.
I know the struggle our single-parents and co-parents deal with raising children on their own. I know the importance of quality, affordable child care. I know the importance of continuing your education as an adult while raising children on your own. I know the necessity of seeing our children grow up in a community safe from criminal activity, safe from environmental pollutants, and safe from social and racial inequality.
